The Sun Is An Obvious Choice

South Africa for Sunshine
South Africa could become the home of the world's largest solar project, built on the edge of the Kalahari Desert to provide an eighth of the country's electricity. More than 400 investors and solar industry professionals gathered in the town of Upington for a conference last week aimed at laying the groundwork for a 5,000MW solar park. The park is estimated at being worth $21.3 billion USD and would be funded mainly by private developers who would build individual projects then sell their power to the national grid. It's a move that would put South Africa more in line with a green economy and help shed its heavy dependence on coal which currently stands at about 90% of the country's energy mix. This project is generating huge international attention as it is in one of the world's best locations for solar power, maintaining some of the strongest sunshine in the world!
